Student Trainee (Summer Enrichment Program)

This position is located in the Office of Human Capital & Training, Talent Management & Employee Experience, Policy and Performance Management Division.

Locations include: TTustin, CA; Washington D.C.; Tampa, FL; Atlanta, GA; Metairie, LA; Boston, MA; Camp Springs, MD; Newark, NJ; Charleston, SC; Houston, TX: Arlington, VA: Burlington, VT: as well as location negotiable after selection.

This position ranges from GS-03, step 01 ($31,512 per year) to GS-05, step 10 ($59,823 per year). The actual salary will be set based on the grade, step, and location of the selectee(s) and/or position. View the 2024 Locality Pay Charts for more information. 

As a Student Trainee (Summer Enrichment Program), you will provide professional assistance and direct support to headquarters and field management staff on a variety of matters in support of USCIS programs and mission requirements.

Duties

  • As a Student Trainee/Intern you will gain valuable professional, administrative, and/or technical on-the-job training and experience with the opportunity to explore future career possibilities with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
  • Research pertinent information from existing sources including hard copy or electronic files, instructions, and standard operating procedures.
  • Assure data in information systems for assigned work is complete, current and accurate.
  • Review documents for pertinent data related to a specific program or project and assists in distributing information within the office.
  • Perform work that requires oral and written communications.
  • Attend training as directed to enhance knowledge in specific administrative areas.

Qualifications

The qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on the closing date of this announcement.

GS-03: You qualify at the GS-03 level if you:

  • Have successfully completed one (1) full academic year of post-high school study AND are enrolled at least half-time in a degree granting program in an accredited institution. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.

GS-04: You qualify at the GS-04 level if you:

  • Have successfully completed two (2) full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree AND are enrolled at least half-time in a degree granting program in an accredited institution. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours.

GS-05: You qualify at the GS-05 level if you:

  • Have successfully completed four (4) academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree AND are enrolled at least half-time in a degree granting program in an accredited institution. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.

Other Information

This is a Student Intern position in the Pathways Program. This is a temporary summer student internship, beginning 05/05/2024 and ending 8/31/2024. Internships may be extended or converted to another student appointment at the discretion of the hiring office. If converted to a career Student Intern position (no not-to-exceed date) the agency may non-competitively convert the student to a term or permanent position in the competitive service after successful completion of their academic studies and program requirements. Conversion to a Federal competitive service position will be at the discretion of the agency and is neither guaranteed nor implied. Selected individuals are placed in an excepted service position that integrates their academic studies with relevant federal work experience.
