Scope of Eligibility: Open to applicants who meet the requirements below.

Description : Under the general supervision of a Principal Biologist or other supervisory officer in the Department of Environmental Protection, appointee will assist with difficult, technical work involved in the collection and processing of finfish samples and data entry associated with fish and wildlife research and management, both in a lab and field setting.

Specific to the Position: Appointee may perform a variety of assignments at the Nacote Creek field station and various remote field locations. These positions require working at the Nacote Creek Research Station on office days, in addition to working outdoors on field days. Office hours are generally 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (Monday – Friday). Field days are generally 6:30 am to 4:30 pm (Monday – Friday). Maximum number of work hours allowed per fiscal year is 900. The number of hours worked each week are flexible and will depend on project needs, including occasional early morning and evening processing and sampling duties.

Appointee will assist with field and data processing duties associated with the Bureau’s Commercial Fisheries Unit and Artificial Reef Program. This includes processing biological samples in a field or lab setting, the analyzing of fish diet contents, entering data into approved databases, and other duties as they arise. Appointee must be able to identify various marine and estuarine finfish species. Appointee will assist with commercial harvester and dealer report entry. This includes data entry, data verification, and communicating with commercial stakeholders. Appointee will be required to possess basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access).

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver's license, and be willing to travel throughout the state.

Preferred Skill Set: Comfortable approaching and speaking with commercial harvesters, dealers, and members of the public. Proven communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work independently, organize work, and solve problems following prescribed procedures. Knowledge of handling, measuring, and weighing of fish and shellfish in a lab or field setting. Ability to work outside for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions. Preference given to college graduates with field sampling and lab experience.

Requirements

License: Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.

Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act".

Authorization to Work: Selected candidates must be authorized to work in the United States per the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations. Note: The State of New Jersey does not provide sponsorship for citizenship to the United States.
