Research Assistant I - Pharmacology (Johnson)

HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the Laboratory of Dr. Kari Johnson at the Department of Pharmacology at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USUHS.
Research in the Johnson Laboratory focuses on physiological adaptations in basal ganglia circuits that occur following psychoactive drug exposure in mice, and how these adaptations relate to cognitive impairments caused by drugs. We are particularly interested in roles of G protein-coupled receptors in modulating neurotransmission at basal ganglia synapses and how these receptors modify behavior under both normal and pathological conditions.
Responsibilities:
  1. Performs laboratory research projects, including collection and organization of data. Makes detailed observations about experiments. Techniques used will include stereotaxic surgery, in vivo manipulation of circuits using optogenetic and chemogenetic techniques, and behavioral pharmacology. Prior experience with any of these techniques is beneficial but not required.
  2. Assists in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  3. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories, and logbooks.     
  4. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases.     
  5. Maintains supplies in the laboratory and keeps the laboratory area clean.
  6. Provides basic data analysis and interpretation.
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; ability to follow detailed instructions; good communication and analytical skills. 
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree is required.
Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum of 0-2 years of work experience is required.
Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
